(Farnborough International Air Show – July 17, 2006) CMC Electronics Inc. is leading the Canadian Galileo Safety Of Life demonstrator project with the support of two major partners, NovAtel and the École de Technologie Supérieure (ETS). NovAtel will provide the satellite receivers and the ETS will develop a Galileo simulator for testing the satellite receivers. In addition to managing the project, CMC will develop the aviation application software to complete the Safety Of Life aviation receiver.

The future European Satellite Navigation System known as Galileo passed its first practical test on December 28, 2005, when the European Union launched the first satellite known as GIOVE-A. This milestone validates over ten years of work performed jointly by the European Space Agency (ESA) and the European Union to develop a complementary satellite navigation system to the U.S. Global Positioning System (GPS). The successful launch of GIOVE-A secures European rights to satellite frequencies allocated to Galileo by the International Telecommunication Union. The next project milestone will be the launch of a second demonstrator, GIOVE-B, in 2006. A four-satellite mini-constellation will be deployed in space in 2008 to validate the system operation. Europe plans to put thirty satellites into orbit by 2010. The Galileo constellation will provide a Safety Of Life service. This service will provide aircraft with superior reliability required for critical operations and is the focus of this project.

The development of the Safety Of Life demonstrator is supported under a technology development contract awarded to CMC Electronics by the Canadian Space Agency (CSA). Technical exchanges are planned with several European partners to ensure that the Canadian technology demonstrator, which will be completed in 2007, will meet the latest aviation Safety Of Life requirements.
